Session 1

Students will be able to select from one of the following sessions.

Ag tech for animal and plant production
From smart animal collars to precision planting equipment to apps on your mobile phone, discover how smart ag tech is improving profitability and productivity on farms.

Agriculture and Environment - Do we resemble mum or dad or grandpa or grandma?
Do we resemble mum or dad or grandpa or grandma? Why? It’s all due to “Genetics”. How can we use genetics to improve crops?

Agriculture and Environment - Plant DNA Detectives
Extract DNA from plants and discover how DNA fingerprinting is used as a tool in the fields of forensics, plant breeding and conservation.

Agriculture and Environment - Plough pull force
One of the jobs of an Agricultural Engineer is to design tillage equipment that mechanically disturbs the soil to create a perfect environment for a growing crop. We will be using a scale model to observe soil tillage and measure how much force it takes to successfully plough the soil.

Archaeologists Don't Dig Dinosaurs
Students will engage in hands-on experience in the Ãâ·ÑɫƬ's archaeology teaching laboratory. During this session, they will examine real material from an archaeological excavation and be guided in how to use the results of this exercise to tell a story about our human past.

Aviation - Let's take to the skies
How do aeroplanes fly? What forces keep aircraft in the air? In this session students will explore the aerodynamics of flight by constructing and flight testing a model glider.

Civil engineering - Building better bridges
Students will build a bridge using our lego-type kits and measure the internal forces. Groups will compete to hold the most weight on their bridge.

Counselling
Learn about careers in counselling, where therapeutic skills and knowledge can assist people to make life-enhancing emotional, mental and lifestyle changes. Ãâ·ÑɫƬ will prepare you to have the right skills to assist people to better their lives.

Creative Arts and Community Wellbeing
Our one-of-a-kind Creative Arts and Community Wellbeing degree will grow your creativity, your facilitation and leadership skills, and your understanding of the needs of community. Specialise in either Music, Theatre, or Visual Art and learn how your creative practice can engage positively with communities to build resilience, capacity, and cohesion. During this experience day workshop, students will have a Q&A session with recent graduates and then split off into their chosen discipline (music, theatre or visual art) and participate in a community-styled workshop showcasing the skills and experiences that graduates will gain from this degree.

Creative Writing - What makes good writing? You be the Judge
Students will examine 3 shortlisted poems from the recent Bruce Dawe Poetry prize and judge which one they think should receive the award. Students are given a general presentation about what makes an award-winning Australian poem. They are put into groups to make their selection and deliver a presentation on why they think their selection best represents good writing.

Criminology - Can you identify a 'criminal'?
Dive into the exciting world of criminology, where YOU assume the role of a criminologist-in-training. To kick off, you'll be presented with images of eight people. Six of them have crossed onto the wrong side of the law, while the remaining two are squeaky clean. Your challenge? Identify the innocent faces among the lawbreakers. Following the challenge, we'll delve into your perceptions of people who commit crimes and the reasons behind your selections. We'll also explore how early criminologists identified criminals and consider whether we still employ some of their methods today.

Crooked' red blood cells in a baby? Using medical science to diagnose disease
Are you interested in the Medical Sciences? In this hands-on lab activity, you will analyse a blood film assessing and analysing the appearance of blood cells in a baby with an unknown disease. You will also use DNA samples from the baby and the baby's family to confirm what you saw on the microscope using molecular biology techniques. You will then compare the test results for all family members to complete a pedigree (family tree) and make a final diagnosis of the condition.

Education - Why teach?
You probably already have some idea about becoming a teacher because you are at school, but there’s more to know! This session will help you to identify the personal attributes and core skills needed to become a great teacher.

Electrical engineering - Building better robots
During this session students will work through a series of small electronics activities that incorporate robotics, electronics and coding.

Experience Nursing as a career at Ãâ·ÑɫƬ in our simulated clinical laboratories
This 90 minute session will give you a hands-on look at Nursing using the latest clinical simulation technology led by experienced registered nurses

Food Science - Sweet strength
Learn how recipes/formulation and processing conditions can affect the strength of gummies and marshmallows.

Graphic Design - Learn how to design your own logo using Adobe Illustrator
Unlock your design skills and learn about the creative process of making your own logo. In this design workshop, you'll dive into the fundamentals of logo creation, understanding essential tools and techniques in Adobe Illustrator along the way. Learn how to craft impactful designs that captivate audiences and elevate your brand identity.

Law & Justice - Where a career in law can take you
Find out about the courses on offer from the School of Law and Justice and see what interesting 'out of the box' avenues a law degree can open up for you. You will also have the opportunity to participate in an interactive fun law activity.

Mechanical engineering - Building better mechanical cars
Students will create a Meccano car that will have a motor placed into it to compete for the fastest times on our circuit..

Physiotherapy - Let’s get physical with physiotherapy
This session will give you hands on experience doing physiotherapy-related activities when rehabilitating a person with a knee injury

Social Work and Human Services - mapping the territory
Students will explore the diversity of the purposes and activities that social workers and human service workers engage in.

Urban Planning - Follow the map
Planners use a range of tools to design, communicate, and coordinate complex urban and regional development and this activity will focus on one of our favourites: maps! For this activity, you will be presented with a set of thematic maps frequently used by urban and regional planners and your task is to explain the exiting layout for Springfield and design a structure plan for a new residential community within Springfield that is sustainable, socially-inclusive, and great place to live, work, and play.

Visual Arts - Ceramics
This workshop will explore hand-building with a Raku clay. The activity is focused on providing participants with some basic hand-building skills and caters for people with a wide range of skills and who may or may not have any prior experience working with clay. Please note*- Participants should bring an apron or clothing that can get clay on it.

Wildlife Detectives
Australia’s wildlife ranges from tiny planigales up to large kangaroos. Work together to work out who is who in the zoo and see what it’s like to study wildlife at uni!

From stage to screen - directing actors
Theatre and film are very different mediums for telling stories, but filmmakers can learn a lot about directing actors and action from theatre practice. Get behind the scenes and operate a camera, capture audio, direct and act in scenes, and record it all!. You will also have the chance to talk to a current film student about their experience as a Ãâ·ÑɫƬ student and future industry professional.
